They’re keeping Indian bespoke menswear well and alive! The designers behind Mumbai’s luxury menswear label SS Homme, husband-wife duo Sandeep and Sarah Gonsalves, have quietly and studiously been growing their eponymous brand that has in time gone on to dress several Bollywood stars and even Akash Ambani on the recent cover of GQ. Yet, you’ll never find them posing for the shutterbugs at celebrity dos or dropping pouting selfies on Instagram – they’d rather let their clothes do all the talking! They spend their time invested in sourcing fabrics from around the world on their travels and creating sharply tailored suits in keeping with the latest trends.
Not surprisingly, their very first fashion show at the Porsche showroom was a resounding success. Male models walked the ramp in their SSTRUCTURE collection sporting handcrafted double-breasted suits stitched with horsehair canvas, convertible bandhgalas, sherwanis with modern silhouettes and structured overcoats. One spotted some unusual colours in the collection, along with trendy accessories, bespoke shoes and briefcases. With several celebrities having shown up to watch the ‘dapperdom’, the showstoppers for the night were actor Saqib Saleem, singer Arjun Kanungo and digital entrepreneur Nowshad Rizwanullah.
I caught up with the designers for a quick chat after the show…
What was the hardest part of putting together this collection?
The hardest part was the actual event. We did 32 bespoke pieces for the line, all of which had to be accessorised with bespoke shoes and bags, custom lapel pins and complementary accessories. But, all in all, the thrill of showcasing with Porsche drove us. The collection was an amalgamation of the last 6 months of hard work.
The source of inspiration for this collection?
To put it in one word: Framework. We took the sturdy framework of a sports car and drew parallels with the bespoke construction behind a good suit. It’s all in the details, as we wanted to showcase just that.
Your fashion philosophy?
Less is more. Whether it’s ceremonial Indian wear or a clean cut business suit, the fit and fabric is the crux of it all. We believe in using only the finest raw materials to achieve this.
3 things every man should have in his wardrobe?
A bespoke business suit. A black tie Tuxedo. And a spew of well-fitted white shirts.
Your future plans?
Instead of expanding multi-city, we’re planning on specialising more into the craft and exploring the design world more systematically. You’ll be seeing a lot more of SS HOMME on the runway.
