Ricky Martin as Gianni Versace’s lover on TV

It’s one of the most hotly anticipated TV shows. The second series of American Crime Story will unravel the truth behind the gruesome murder of famed fashion designer Gianni Versace, that shocked the world twenty years ago. Gianni was one of the most celebrated designers, known for his talk of the town creations like Elizabeth Hurley’s safety pin dress and being a favourite of the “Supers” of the catwalk at that time – Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington. When he was bloodily gunned down on his doorstep of his lavish mansion in Miami one morning as he went to collect the newspaper by mad man Andrew Cunanan, a void was left in the fashion world.

It has always been one of those haunting incidents whose details have never been revealed, since Cunanan killed himself with the same gun eight days later. Ricky Martin in his first acting role plays Gianni’s longtime lover Antonio D’Amico who was the person to actually discover Gianni’s bloody body on the doorstep, while Penelope Cruz plays Gianni’s sister Donatella and the flamboyant designer is played by Edgar Ramirez. When the pop singer released the above picture on his Instagram account, it sent social media into a tizzy with the likeness of the cast. Incidentally, the real-life lover Antonio D’Amico who subsequently went into depression has lashed out at the TV show for fictionalising certain events.

Based on the book Vulgar Favors by Maureen Orth, The Assassination of Gianni Versace will air in early 2018.
