Lobster lovers, drop anchor!

With a new restaurant opening every other week in Mumbai, competition is cut-throat and diner’s palates are getting more finicky. One place that’s been standing out has been Shizusan (yes, that’s a tongue twister!) with its range of street food and dishes emanating from the numerous regions of South East Asia.

Interiors

It’s inspired by 18th century shophouses or ‘respite areas’ that sprang up across Asia for travellers. Shophouses typically had an opium den on the ground floor and a brothel on the floor above. Of course, you’ll find none of that here! The ground floor houses a sushi bar and the only aspect of tartness here is the bright red bar on the first floor.

Cuisine

The menu is extensive, with everything from salads to baos to tapas to sushi to curries to dimsums and mains. Phew! The Asian Watermelon Salad was refreshing, while the 17 Ingredient Slaw bursts with a spicy tang and the crunch of sali on top. Amongst dimsums, the Poached Chicken dumplings come accompanied by a lovely spicy broth and the Waterchestnut & Chive were pretty good too. Veggies don’t miss the curried Penang Laksa Spiced Lotus Stem and pork lovers can indulge on thick, juicy chunks of Adobo Braised Pork Belly.

Standout dish

The Black Pepper Lobster that swam with mushrooms, garlic and cilantro. Simply divine!

Sore spot

None of the desserts we tried really made the cut. So, instead end things on a chilled note with the Vietnamese Ca Phe Da – coffee, ice cubes, condensed milk…and plenty of calories!
